Style SOS: What do I wear to a New Year's Eve party?

"I've been invited to a New Year's Eve party that calls for festive attire, but I really don't want to wear anything silver or gold – and I definitely don't want to wear a pair of those sunglasses with the year on them. How can I dress up a bit without looking over the top?" - James via email

Ah James, we feel your pain. A dress code you can’t wiggle out of is never fun. But just because it's a festive time of year, doesn't mean there's an obligation to take your cues from tinsel. There are ways to adhere to the dress code in a way that you'll feel comfortable and confident at your New Year's Eve party.

Firstly, sideline those metallics and consider pairing dark reds and greens instead. Wearing these shades will help you look festive without erring on the kitsch side of things. “For more casual parties, go for a rollneck jumper in a bold green shade with some flannel trousers and a pair of black boots,” advises Thread stylist Freddie Kemp. “You’ll feel comfortable, and the festive colour will do all the heavy lifting.”

If your New Year's Eve gathering is a little more fancy, reach for velvet. A velvet blazer or even a bomber is a transformative item that will instantly lift your look and safely guide you into festive territory. What’s great is that the rest of your look can remain as casual as you like. We recommend wearing a velvet bomber or jacket in navy with a burgundy rollneck and a pair of jeans for a rich, festive colour pairing. If velvet is a bit much for you, the texture of corduroy offers a very similar effect.

Finally, finish off your look with a smart (and warm) overcoat. A versatile piece, like a dapper overcoat, will see you well into 2020. And how better to debut it then with a glass of bubbly in hand? Happy New Year, James!
