Beyond the start of the week, when we’ve all had quite enough of dodging the pub, after-work drinks will loom as an irresistible remedy to your day of deadlines. When popping home to change isn’t an option (it never really is, is it?), your best bet is dressing each day for both work and play. Luckily, rules on dressing at work are now rather lax. It’s much more acceptable to inject personality into your office garb, and you should take advantage. As ever, it’s all about balance. To lend a helping hand, we’ve laid out some key pieces to wear at work for round-the-clock style.

Unless your office is massively chilled out or a fashion start-up (hello,, your office wear still needs to look professional, but that doesn’t mean it should sacrifice personality. Swap out a classic blue button-down for a chunky knit to lend a bit of character, pushing the boat out a little with texture and colour whilst still looking polished. A cable-knit in bright blue or wine red would do the trick. If you want to go that extra inch, experiment with different necklines; roll-neck jumpers are inherently slick, while a shawl neck is a hybrid of a classic sweater, roll neck and cardigan – as unique as it is versatile. Whichever you go for, ensure its neither baggy nor skin-tight, so it sits nicely under a jacket or overcoat but also looks good on its own.

Legwear has probably benefited most from the dress down movement. We now have brilliantly tailored shapes in much more relaxed and comfortable fabrics, ideal for when you need to leg it to be at a date on time. Opt for trousers in a sturdy chino fabric with subtle tailoring details, or give judo pants a whirl for a contemporary alternative to traditional trousers that still have a professional slant.

Another easy way to smarten things up is with an overcoat. A formalwear classic with a tailored shape, overcoats have been a workplace staple for as long as we can remember. Back in the day, traditional hues such as black, navy, or camel would have been the only acceptable choice. Lap up the freedom and experiment with a pattern, helping to dress down the overcoat for when you hit the post-work scene. Go for a classic yet cool check pattern, or mix it up with eye-catching dogtooth

Now for the finishing touch, the pièce de résistance, if you will: a pair of white trainers. If your office is cool with it, a pair of trainers not only feels fantastic on your feet all day, they offer the perfect level of off-duty cool and versatility. If your office is a bit more formal, no fear. Sport a slightly smarter shoe (a pair of desert boots, for instance) for the day and pack a pair of trainers for partytime. Opt for a more minimal design for extra versatility, safe in the knowledge that you can throw them on with any look and they’re guaranteed to work.

A masterful balance of Project Manager and Mr. “Who Wants Shots?”, this dress-down look will take you seamlessly from the office to your post-work plans. Take heed, and wearing the same thing from your 9am meeting to your 9pm drinks date will never be a nightmare.
