How to pull off fun socks

How to pull off fun socks

Gone are the days when socks had to be black and solely functional. Today, that subtle flash of fun below the hem of your trousers is an opportunity to show a little colour and personality – one that can put a smile on anyone’s face (your own included). You may have just been gifted a bright pair for Christmas and, instead of dismissing them to the back of your drawer along with your irreverent socks from exes and distant relatives, we’d urge you to give them a chance. You'll probably find that a fun pair of socks can in fact be the finishing touch you didn’t know your outfit needed. You just have to know how to pull them off.

Know your audience

The first thing to note when wearing fun socks is where you’ll be wearing them. Keep in mind your audience and whether or not the socks will be appropriate. Offices are beginning to have a more casual feel (especially start-ups), so if your office is fairly laid back, this is usually a safe bet. A funeral or a formal event, on the other hand, probably isn’t the best place to debut your flashy striped socks.

Choose the right print

As much as we love Homer Simpson, we reckon he looks better on TV than he does on your socks. So, unless you’re chilling at home with your feet up, cartoon or novelty socks are generally best worn indoors. Instead, opt for bright polka dots, checks, stripes, camo, or, if you’re keen to make more of a statement, small motifs that show off your personality or interests. When picking a colour, we’d advise going for a shade that matches one other thing in your outfit – this thoughtful move will show that you’ve taken a bit of time and effort with your finishing touch.

Be wary of clashing

“I'd advise wearing your fun socks with a simple outfit. When paired with a bold, colourful outfit, your socks may start to look too comical instead of just adding an element of fun,” says Thread stylist Freddie Kemp. We recommend ensuring that if your socks are jazzy, they’re the only patterned part of your look. Keeping the rest of your outfit fairly neutral will let your quirky socks do the talking.
