The freshest kicks for the new year

Is it really January if you’ve not proclaimed at least once that you’re going to start hitting the gym again? Fitting exercise into your already busy schedule isn’t the easiest, but picking a pair of trainers that will work for you on rest days as well as the running machine should be. 

The rise of athleisure means trainers have become a ubiquitous item that can be woven into smart outfits as easily as they’re paired with sweatpants, and whilst running shoes tend to have a more obviously sporty look, you can definitely still rock them with your off-duty outfits.

We’ve found the four best trainers that will motivate you to get to your workout, but will also look good on your cheat day.


Why it's great at the gym: Adidas’ energy boost trainers are designed to provide targeted support for runners, so they look sleek and sporty, but are super comfy and supportive. Their soft knit upper is flexible around your foot, but the dual-density boost™ cushioning and Torsion Spring midsoles offer the landing and toe support you need for endurance sports and long distance running. What’s more, they’re designed for city running, so they will still be comfortable after prolonged impact with the concrete.

How to wear it on your off day: Wear these shoes with other sporty classics, like a hoodie and sweatpants, but layer with a gilet for an unexpected finish. This will create a more interesting take on  a tracksuit. A gilet is also great for bringing warmth to your outfit without feeling too bulky over your hoodie. 

Tonal colours, like the matching greens paired with other neutrals, show you’re thinking about your casual outfit as much as you would with your smarter wardrobe. Wear it from the gym to brunch or even a laid-back evening at the pub.

Nike Vapor Street Pegasus

Why it's great at the gym: Nike’s Vapour Street running shoes are designed for both outdoor runs and indoor training sessions. They’re made of mesh, making them breathable and durable, but their most interesting feature is the pointed sole, which is the same feature as the Zoom Vaporfly 4% – the ground-breaking speed shoe developed by Nike to break the two-hour marathon barrier. It’s said to reduce your marathon time by up to three minutes, but we’ll leave you to find out if that’s true.

How to wear it on your off day: The Japanese-inspired aesthetic of these trainers means they work best worn with loose-fitting items that feel considered but not too smart. A dark rollneck and cord joggers – rather than jeans – give this look a luxury loungewear feel that can be worn at the bar or around the house. Keep the rest of your look dark so the colour of the trainers really stands out.

Karhu ChampionAir Classic 

Why it's great at the gym: Finnish brand Karhu released the ChampionAir in 1977 and sold over 1,000,000 pairs internationally by 1984. The brand was the first to develop an air-cushioned midsole, which along with an elevated arch and air-cushioned heel, provides extra support and reduces strain on the knees, pelvis, and lower back.  

How to wear it on your off day: Karhus are casual enough that you can wear them with almost any smart casual outfit. They look great with chinos and a cosy knit, and the blue isn’t so bold that it can’t be paired with other colours. 

The ChampionAirs almost look more like fashion trainers than sport shoes, making them an easy win if you know you’ll want to wear them straight from the gym and out for the day, or even to work. Just remember to change your socks.

Veja Condor

Why it's great at the gym: Veja is dotting pavements everywhere right now, and for good reason. Take these Condor running shoes, for instance. They’re the perfect combination of fashion and function. What more, the brand is also known for its sustainability credentials, and these are made from over 50% natural or recycled materials, but the brand’s commitment to doing things right doesn’t stop there. A running technician from Mizuna was hired to bring running culture into Veja, as well as a deep technical knowledge that influenced the design of the Condor. The resulting trainer offers enhanced support and cushioning against impact whether you’re on the treadmill or just walking around town.

How to wear it on your off day: If you’re ready to move your athleisure look away from plain white trainers and into something more running-inspired, pair your Vejas with tapered trousers, a jumper, and a boxy jacket that gives the appearance of being more tailored and formal. The muted tone of the shoes goes well with slightly smarter items, and can be woven into the rest of your look without clashing, making these a great option for gym-to-brunch, or work-to-gym wear.
