What exactly are: Corduroy trousers?

What exactly are: Corduroy trousers?

In a nutshell

Strong, hard-wearing and with a dense weave to keep you warm, corduroy trousers have a ridged texture that looks like cords stitched together.

In French, corde du roi means "cord of the king." So it follows that these trousers were popularised by French and English aristocracy in the 17th century.

How to wear them well

"Think of corduroys as the chinos of winter," says Thread senior stylist Sophie Gaten. "Because they're more tailored than your average trousers, they go best with smart leather shoes and any plain shirt, t-shirt or jumper."
