Slipping off his boat in 1934 was the final straw that led sailor Paul A. Sperry to come up with something rather genius: the non-slip deck shoe. Taking inspiration from his cocker spaniel’s paws, which never seemed to stumble on slippery surfaces, Sperry cut grooved patterns in natural rubber and glued them to an old pair of trainers to create the very first iteration of the Sperry boat shoe we know and love today. Beyond boat shoes, the designer crafts handsome boots, trainers, and other footwear too.

Born on the water, Sperry takes pride in protecting it via its Seacycled collection. Each pair in the range is crafted with plastic waste recovered from the ocean and land – that’s around five plastic bottles per shoe. By 2030, the brand aims to create 50% of its products using this method.
