The perfect antidote to a bout of mid-winter lethargy? Getting off for a warm-weather getaway. The classic hassle, of course, is figuring out what to pack. But so long as you’ve got your Stephen King and your passport in tow, you can leave the rest to us. From vibrant swim shorts to a pair of sunnies, these are the essentials for your great escape.

A colourful t-shirt

Warm weather means colour. And more colour. Because your surroundings will inspire joy, so too should your apparel. “Wearing brighter colours on your getaway will give you your requisite boost,” says Thread stylist Toby Standing. “Plus, being away from your daily grind gives you a chance to try out some more daring styles without the risk of running into your boss.”

With the license to experiment, try colours you wouldn’t usually go for, like yellow or pink, and don’t be afraid to chuck in some pattern too. Wear your fun t-shirt with a pair of white jeans or shorts, as long as they come in a breathable cotton fabric – you’ll want to avoid any risk of getting sweaty in the sun.

Swim shorts

It seems like a no-brainer, but they’re also one of the most commonly forgotten items (along with the aforementioned passport). If you’re booked to go somewhere warm or beach-adjacent, take full advantage of the setting and pack a few pairs of swim shorts. “You’ll make extra use of your swim shorts by buying a pair that can moonlight as a pair of lounging shorts when you transition from beach to bar,” Toby says. Our recommendation? Look to brands like Polo Ralph Lauren and Orlebar Brown for super-stylish swim shorts that are also made really well (and look really good once the sun sets).

Sunglasses

Indeed, sunglasses protect your eyes and are essential for this reason. But the bonus is that they also look awesome, and your new profile picture deserves Maverick vibes. On top of making sure your sunnies offer 100% UV protection and a high level of sun glare reduction, you’d also be wise to cater to your face shape by referring to our handy guide. Once you’ve figured out your ideal shape, opt for a versatile pair that you can wear over and over during your trip. Save the wackier options for festivals.

Denim shirt

In addition to packing a couple of linen shirts, we’d urge you to also consider a denim shirt. Breathable and laid-back, a denim shirt is the ultimate evening layer for when the temperature drops (but not enough to require a sweater). You can wear one as a standalone item, or layer it over a t-shirt with a pair of shorts. “They’re easy to throw on and a stone-cold icon of menswear,” Toby says.

White trainers

A good pair of minimal white trainers is a must for your holiday (and beyond). Easy to style with almost any look for their inherently laid-back feel, white trainers are ideal for day trips or dinners during your holiday. Go for a nice, lightweight option with clean lines and minimal detailing, so that your colourful shorts and/or t-shirt can stand out. “White trainers are available at every conceivable price point and will serve you well after your holiday, too,” Toby says.
