Five ways to wear: A white t-shirt

Five ways to wear: A white t-shirt

While you usually wear a white t-shirt with jeans or under a jumper, there are many more options you might not have considered. "The great thing about the white t-shirt," says Thread's lead stylist, Kasia Katner, "is that it's so simple and therefore so versatile."

Below, Kasia talks us through five of the key ways to deploy the white t-shirt.

1. When you find yourself wearing all one colour

Outfit: White t-shirt, navy jumper, indigo jeans, black leather boots

Why this works: "This is a simple but stylish outfit: a navy jumper and indigo jeans. The issue is that it's all a similar colour. The white t-shirt breaks up the block of blue a bit without running the risk of clashing with the navy tones, or distracting from the overall effect. Simple, but it looks great."

2. For an afternoon that may turn into a night out

Outfit: White t-shirt, navy Harrington jacket, black jeans, black loafers

Why this works: "This outfit looks right for daytime, but the smart shoes and jacket add a bit of an edge and look great for a night out. A colourful t-shirt would be too distracting or over the top. White works perfectly here."

3. For a weekend away

Outfit: White t-shirt, indigo jeans, white trainers

Why this works: "A white t-shirt and jeans has been a solid look for decades, and it's nearly always appropriate, whether you're in a cathedral or a dive bar. Plus, when you're packing for a weekend away, throwing in these three basics will get you really far. Add a jumper and jacket to your bag and you've got three or four outfit combinations. This particular one is really simple and minimalist, but you could also add to it as you like, maybe with a bomber jacket or some knitwear."

4. When the dress code's smart casual (and you want to stand out)

Outfit: White t-shirt, khaki blazer, navy chinos, tan brogue boots

Why this works: "Smart casual can be the hardest dress code to get right. But this combination will always work. A white t-shirt goes with absolutely any blazer you own, and with a pair of chinos the result is a nice balance of tailored and relaxed."

5. When you want to try something new

Outfit: White t-shirt, navy formal trousers, fairly minimal trainers

Why this works: "Combining smart and casual is a great way of upping your style game. But it isn't easy to pull off, and the trick is choosing mostly simple clothes. So a white t-shirt is ideal, as it's so classic it doesn't compete with the contrast between the casual trainers and smart trousers."
