What exactly are: Driving shoes?

What exactly are: Driving shoes?

In a nutshell

Also known as car shoes, these suede loafers have rubber nubbins on the underside that are made to grip a car's accelerator, brake and clutch.

Backstory

The car shoe emerged in 1960s Italy, just as Fiat was revolutionising Europe's car industry. Since then, Tod's has made one of the most iconic styles and marketed it to a certain type of man—the guy who has the interest and means to own footwear just for driving.

How to wear them well

"The driving shoe is neat and delicate, so the rest of your outfit should be tailored but casual," says Thread senior stylist Sam Monaghan. "There isn't any diversity to how you can wear driving shoes: they're part of a very specific look. Wear them with a polo or Oxford shirt and chinos or slim jeans and you'll look as if you came out of the womb with them on."
