Making the case for: Mustard socks

Making the case for: Mustard socks

"One of the most common questions I get, and something that I think a lot of guys struggle with, is how to add some colour to an outfit in a way that's still subtle. I think one of the best ways of doing so is by wearing colourful socks. And of all the colours, mustard's my favourite. Yes, that's very specific and relatively obscure. But here's why you might give them a try.

"When you say colourful socks, a lot of guys will immediately think of stripes or polka dots. And while both work well, I personally prefer the look of solid-coloured socks in bold hues like mustard yellow (or even maroon, green or red). They're a bit more conservative, but also a bit more considered, than printed or patterned socks. To be clear, I'm talking about the colour of English mustard, give or take a shade or two; lemon or canary-yellow socks are so bright they overwhelm.

"I think it’s a bit of a misconception that there are 'rules' about which colours go together. You should feel free to experiment a bit, and mustard happens to go really well with the sorts of colours you're probably already wearing such as navy, grey and brown. But the key rule is not to overthink it: the only way you can wear mustard socks badly is by trying to match them to something else in your outfit. Unless you're wearing a yellow jumper or trousers, they're the top tip I can give for adding a little something to every outfit.

"Convinced? I like these two pairs from Paul Smith and London Sock Company."
