Style SOS: What do I get my father-in-law for Christmas?

Style SOS: What do I get my father-in-law for Christmas?

"I want to get my father-in-law something special for Christmas, but I'm not sure what would make the right impression. Any thoughts?"

No matter how close you are, shopping for father-in-laws in no mean feat. It’s easy to be uninventive and opt for a bottle of port or a multi-pack of socks, but if you really want to make a good impression, it’s best to put in a little more thought.

Gift-giving should feel as good as receiving, so take the time to consider what will really impress  your father-in-law come Christmas morning, and you might become his favourite child-in-law. And let’s be honest, isn’t that what you’ve been angling for all along?

The traditional dad

If your father-in-law is a fairly traditional type, then lucky you. A smart leather wallet or belt are stylish additions that can replace the worn out ones he’s been clinging onto since the 80s. If he’s not so much of an accessories guy, try a fisherman’s knit – let’s face it, what dad doesn’t love a cosy cable-knit jumper? What’s more, it will be perfect for falling asleep in on the sofa after Christmas lunch.

The adventurer

For men who enjoy the great outdoors, you can think outside the (gift)box a little. Any explorer would appreciate a new pair of hiking boots or a utility rucksack. Or, if you want to go for something more low-key, comfy socks or a graphic tee with a fun adventure-themed print are easy options that are sure to go down well.

The businessman

If he's always talking about deals at the dinner table, he would probably may appreciate something that will help him look elevated in his nine-to-five. Look to silver cufflinks, a leather-strapped watch, or even a classic Ralph Lauren shirt for timeless ideas that will still feel personal to your father-in-law. If he's working late in the office, he might not have much time to shop for himself, so these thoughtful gifts will make his life a little easier. Bonus points if you can find him something he can wear outside of the office.

The hipster dad

If your father-in-law is the type of guy who frequents indie concerts and micro-breweries, he probably has his own, very specific sense of style. If you want to go a bit more personal than a gift card, take note of the things you see him rocking most often. If he’s big on accessories, why not try a warm winter hat or printed scarf? If he prefers to make a statement with bold clothing, a bright sweater or statement tee could do the trick.

The quirky dad

If your father-in-law is a bit of a jokester, you can have some fun with present buying. Printed shirts or a funky Fair Isle knit is great for the festive season and is the ideal gift for dads who love to let their personality shine. And of course, you can always fall back on novelty socks.
