"I just got a promotion at work, and I'm curious if I should step up my wardrobe to reflect my new status? Or am I overthinking it?" - Terry via email
First up, congrats Terry! Second up, you’re not overthinking it. Getting a promotion is a watershed moment for anyone; you might have been working towards this for a couple of years, so it’s natural that you’re now seeing everything, including your wardrobe, with a fresh set of eyes.
The most important thing to remember is that you got this promotion, and you shouldn’t feel the need to reinvent yourself solely on the basis of your new title. Before you walk back into the office, promotion in tow, our best advice is to proceed with caution. You don’t want to come off as though you suddenly think you’re better than anyone, so we suggest not turning up in a flashy designer suit on your first day on the new job – especially if your old work attire consisted of a polo and jeans.
A better approach would include remaining authentic to you and your personal tastes, considering what your new role might entail, as well as double checking if the dress code differs depending on your level (it’s not unheard of). Will you now be heading off to big meetings with high-level members of the company? Presenting to lots of people? Then maybe begin wearing some slightly more considered outfits to help you stand a little taller. For example, casual shirts instead of tees, linen trousers over jeans, that kind of thing. Just remember that this change should help you feel more elevated (and self-confident) and not be done with anyone else in mind.
