What are Kickers boots?

What are Kickers boots?

In a nutshell

A casual shoe worn by rock stars for almost 50 years. Kickers are perfect when you need something more rugged than trainers, but still want to be comfortable.

In the 1970s, a French designer noticed how difficult it was to find shoes that looked good with jeans. So he created a style inspired by denim’s patches and rivets, with a chunky sole that looked good with flares. The shoe was a hit with musicians, with Roger Daltrey, Elton John and David Bowie all sporting the style onstage.

A decade later, clubbers adopted the shoe as a way to get around the Hacienda’s ‘no trainers’ policy and the Stone Roses even wore them in the video for Madchester classic ‘Fool’s Gold’. They’ve since graced the feet of everyone from Noel Gallagher to Jarvis Cocker and the Arctic Monkeys.

How to wear them well

Though Kickers seem to be half-trainer, half-boot, they only ever work casually. “They’re too characteristic to be dressed up,” says Thread stylist Luke McDonald. “But if your style is rugged and you’re looking for an alternative to a classic hiker, then Kickers could be great.” Because they’ve served their time at festivals – both on frontmen and fans – they also look good with anything a bit rock’n’roll, or with streetwear. Think denim and leather jackets, or even slim-fit cargo trousers and a bomber jacket.
