Can I pull off: Black and blue together?

Can I pull off: Black and blue together?

If you've heard the phrase "black and blue never do" you're probably of the mind that navy and black together is one of those timeless, inarguable fashion faux pas. And yet that particular combination is actually one of our stylists' favourites.

"We get this question all the time, and guys often find it hard to believe that blue and black can look great in the same outfit," says Thread stylist Millie Rich. "Dark shades naturally work well together, so there's no danger of clashing, and the combination of blue and black looks particularly sophisticated."

Want proof? Below, Millie shares a successful black-and-blue outfit, and four tips to wearing the two colours together.

  1. Brighten it up. "An entirely navy-and-black outfit can feel too dark, so the brown shoes here make it a bit brighter. Stone chinos, a white t-shirt or white trainers would do the trick, too."
  2. Stay casual. "This colour combination could be tricky if we were talking about a formal suit and shirt. But casually, it works great and looks easy."
  3. Make sure your blues don't look black. "This is a bit pernickety, but I'd avoid navy that's so dark it's almost black. You need more contrast or your whole outfit will blend together, so go for a classic, deep-blue navy instead."
  4. Don’t overthink it. "Whatever the prevailing opinion, black and navy look sharp together. Chances are if you stick to your favourite basics (such as indigo jeans and a black t-shirt or jumper), you'll look great. There are no rules, so don't sweat it!"
