Grooming

Our stylists’ favourite grooming brands

Our stylists’ favourite grooming brands

Hot take: it’s been a weird year. And we’re willing to bet that working from home, only socialising via Zoom, and bingeing more Netflix than ever has had an impact on your grooming routine. The nation has been divided into two camps: those who have dedicated their new-found free time to discovering new products and developing routines that will have them stepping out of the pandemic positively glowing, and those who have let go of every grooming habit they’ve ever had and truly leaned into the novelty of staying in.

Either way, you’ve probably used at least one product each day (please don’t give up the deodorant!). And with the coldest months on the horizon, there’s no better time to invest in new products to soothe your dry winter skin and maintain your newly grown No-Shave November facial fuzz.

But the beauty and grooming industry can feel like a bewildering expanse, no matter if you’re into keeping a strict skincare regime or are more of a shower-and-go type of guy. To help you navigate it with relative ease, we challenged our stylists to narrow down the top brands they think you should know about, and the products that will be worth your while.

Artemis’ pick: Malin + Goetz

Why we love them

Malin + Goetz creates head-to-toe skincare products for all genders, with a focus on natural ingredients. Its slogan, ‘Uncomplicate Your Regimen’, just about sums up how all-encompassing and easy-to-use its selection of grooming products is.

“I love bar soaps,” says stylist Artemis Crowley. “If you pick a good one, like Malin + Goetz’s Peppermint Bar Soap, it’ll smell amazing but without being overpowering like some of the synthetic shower gels marketed to men.”

A major benefit of switching to bar soaps is that they usually last for much longer than a bottle of shower gel, so you end up with a much lower cost-per-wash than with liquid soaps. “They tend to come with minimal packaging, so choosing this form of soap is a more sustainable choice as you’ll be adding less waste to the world,” Artemis says.

Toby’s pick - Aesop

Photographed: Aesop Violet Leaf Hair Balm, 60ml (£23)

Why we love them

Aesop’s formulations that feel like the perfect mix between natural remedies and chemical wizardry,” says stylist Toby Standing. “I use them for literally everything.” Its line of skin, body, and hair care and home and fragrance ranges make great gifts for just about anyone – or you could just treat yourself.

The product worth investing in

“I’ve been using Aesop’s Violet Leaf Hair Balm constantly while I’ve been growing my hair this year,” Toby says. Unlike most waxes and gels, it gives your hair volume and hold without feeling greasy or sticky.

Millie’s pick - Le Labo

Photographed: Le Labo Hand Pomade - Basil, 55ml (£19)

Why we love them

Mostly known for its popular sandalwood scent ‘Santal', Le Labo is leading the way when it comes to unisex perfumes. You might not have heard of it, but you’d almost definitely recognise the smell. The brand’s signature branding, genderless products, and reasonable price points all amount to Le Labo becoming one of the best-loved grooming companies around.

The product worth investing in

“Le Labo is a go-to for me not just for scents, but for hand creams, body washes, and candles,” says stylist Millie Rich. The Basil Hand Pomade is creamy without being greasy, and smells fresh and herby. It’s a great cream to carry around in your pocket or to give as a gift this Christmas.

Freddie’s pick - Lab Series

Why we love them

Lab Series’ collection of easy go-to skin products caters to just about any skin type. Its range includes everything from lifting serums and clay masks for those seriously dedicated to glowing skin, to all-in-one treatments for those who favour a more pared-back approach.

The product worth investing in

“The Oil Control Moisturiser is a fuss-free choice for anyone with slightly greasier skin,” says stylist Freddie Kemp. It’s formulated to target excess sebum in the skin and remove dead cells for a more even-toned complexion.

Izzy’s pick - Anatomē

Why we love them

Anatomē uses ingredients that offer both physical and therapeutic benefits. Its approach to grooming products is a botanical-packed offering that will make you feel great in mind and body.

The product worth investing in

“Anatomē’s Expression + Confidence Essential Oil is great when you need a sense of calm during anxious moments or before big meetings,” says stylist Izzy Harvey. Massage it into your skin and temples, or even add a couple of drops to your bath.

“After using face and body oils for the last two years, I'll never go back to heavy creams and moisturisers,” Izzy says. Not only do oils work wonders for your skin, but developing a relaxing ritual to start the day or wind down at night can be a great way to alleviate stress.
